Lucky Bamboo: Care and Problem Solving

Lucky Bamboo is really made up of the cut stalks of a Dracaena Sanderiana plant. These stalks are usually between 4"- 24" in height. Followers of feng shui believe that Lucky Bamboo brings prosperity and good fortune to a home or business. If a Lucky Bamboo arrangement has three stalks it brings happiness, five stalks bring wealth, and six stalks bring health. Four stalks are never allowed since the word four in Chinese sounds too close to the Chinese word for death. If you buy the Lucky Bamboo stalks loose and unplanted, be sure to keep them in water until you have permanently placed them in a vase or decorative container. If you purchase multiple Lucky Bamboo stems that are tied together, do not remove the ties since this stabilizes the plant. Lucky Bamboo requires very little care and will grow practically anywhere.

CARE OF LUCKY BAMBOO

Planting: Place your Lucky Bamboo in a vase or decorative container. Fill the container part way with pebbles or marbles; always keep the rocks or marbles covered with water. If you are keeping your Lucky Bamboo just in water with no pebbles or marbles, maintain the following water levels; 4-8" stems should sit in 1-2" of water; 10-30" stems should sit in 2-4" of water. Curly or spiral stems of Lucky Bamboo need water levels based on the length of the straight part of the stem, use the amounts listed above.

Light: A Lucky Bamboo needs very little light. It will even survive in a bathroom that has only artificial light. If the leaves on the stalks of your Lucky Bamboo do start to become pale, move the plant to a brighter location. Always avoid placing a Lucky Bamboo in the direct sun.

Water: Keep the marbles and pebbles in your Lucky Bamboo vase covered with water. Replace and add water to the container at least once a week, preferably twice. Every month or so, take the Lucky Bamboo out the water and pebbles, rinse the roots, pebbles, and marbles with fresh water and then put the arrangement back together. If your water has a lot of fluoride or chlorine, use distilled water in your Lucky Bamboo arrangements.

Temperature: Lucky Bamboo does best in warm temperatures between 70-80 degrees; avoid temperatures above 85 degrees or below 60 degrees.

Pests: Do not put Lucky Bamboo outside where it will attract insects. The usual houseplant pests do not bother Lucky Bamboo.

Fertilizer: Fertilize Lucky Bamboo monthly in the spring and summer with an African Violet plant food.

Propagation: Propagation of Lucky Bamboo is by cane cuttings.

Lucky Bamboo FAQ's

1. Can I cut the stalks of my Lucky Bamboo in half to get more plants?
You can definitely try to cut the stalks of Lucky Bamboo, but the success rate is less than 50%. Be sure to use a very sharp knife and cut below a joint in the stalk of the dracaena. Remove all but three or four leaves from the new Lucy Bamboo stem before you put it into water.

2. The tips of the leaves on my Lucky Bamboo are turning yellow.
Discoloration in the leaves of a Lucky Bamboo is usually caused by too much salt, fluoride, or chlorine in the water. Stop fertilizing your plant and try using distilled water.

3. The roots of my Lucky Bamboo are an orange brown color. Does the plant have rust?
No, your Lucky Bamboo is just fine. The roots of a healthy mature Lucky Bamboo are supposed to be an orange brown color.

4. One of the stalks of my Lucky Bamboo plant has turned yellow and the leaves are dying. What can I do to save it?
Sorry, but once the stalk turns yellow the Lucky Bamboo has died and there's nothing you can do. A healthy Lucky Bamboo has a firm green stalk and green leaves.
