Peace Lily (Spathyphylum): Care and Problem Solving

A peace lily is a beautiful indoor plant with large glossy dark green leaves and impressive white flowers that last for weeks. NASA has determined that this easy care table or floor plant can clean the air of harmful toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide. This is one of a very few indoor plants that can bloom even in medium to low light.

CARE OF PEACE LILY (SPATHYPHYLUM)

Light: A peace lily does well in low, medium, or indirect bright light. If there is too much light: the leaves lose their vibrant dark green color and start to look pale green. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves. If there is too little light, the leaves will grow but the plant will not bloom as well or may not bloom at all.

Water: Peace lilies need to dry out, so allow your plant to almost droop before watering it. If the plant droops too much, yellow leaves appear after it is watered. Over watering can cause the tips of the leaves to turn brown.

Fertilizer: Fertilize every other month when the plant is actively growing with a basic houseplant food at ½ strength. Too much fertilizer in the soil in another cause of brown leaf tips.

Temperature: Basic household temperatures between 65-85 are fine for a peace lily.

Pests: Spathyphlum are prone to aphids, spider mites, and scale. Spraying with the green solution not only gets rid of the pests, it also removes dust and improves the appearance of the leaves.

Special Occasions: The peace lily has become a very popular plant to send to a funeral or to the home of one who is in mourning.

PEACE LILY (SPATHYPHYLUM) FAQ’S

1. Why are the tips of the leaves on my spathyphlum turning brown?
There are several possible reasons: too much water, too much fertilizer, or it’s too hot where you put it.

2. My peace lily keeps getting beautiful dark green leaves, but it never blooms. What should I do?
Move your plant into an area with brighter light. I have also found that if you stress the plant by allowing it to really dry out, it produces more flowers.

3. I let my plant dry out until the leaves droop, water it well, and it perks up in about an hour. I have lots of blooms but I keep getting yellow leaves.
You are letting the plant dry out too much before you water it.

4. My peace lily is in a window with a western exposure so it’s getting plenty of light but the leaves are still turning pale.
Your plant is getting too much light. Try moving it to an area with less light.
