Dracaena Reflexa: Care and Problem Solving

This hardy decorative houseplant, native to Madigascar, Mauritius, and other islands of the Indian Ocean is another member of the huge Dracaena family. The regular Dracaena Reflexa, or Pleomele as it is sometimes called, has dark green leaves. The Dracaena Reflexa, Song of India, has yellow stripping on the leaves while the Dracaena Reflexa, Song of Jamaica, has off white stripping on the leaves. In all Pleomele varieties, the short, narrow, pointed leaves are spirally arranged on the stem and tufted at the ends of branches. The Dracaena Reflexa is a slow growing easy care plant that can be used as a table plant, bush, or short tree.

CARE OF DRACAENA REFLEXA

Water: Like all Dracaenas, the Reflexa likes to be kept on the dry side. Always allow at least half of the soil to dry out before watering.

Light: A Dracaena Reflexa with solid dark green leaves does well in medium light. The Song of India and Song of Jamaica, with yellow and white stripes in their leaves, need bright indirect light. Direct sun burns the leaves of all varieties of Dracaena Reflexa.

Temperature: Basic household temperatures between 65-85 degrees are ideal for the Dracaena Reflexa.

Fertilizer: Feed a Dracaena Reflexa only 3 or 4 times a year. Excessive fertilizer causes leaf tip burn.

Soil: Always use a loose quick draining soil for a Dracaena Reflexa; this helps to prevent over watering and root rot. You can add sand to your regular potting mixture if it doesn't seem to drain quickly enough.

Pests: Like most houseplants, a Dracaena Reflexa may attract mealy bugs, spider mites, or scale; if this occurs, spray all side of the leaves with the green solution.

Propagation: Dracaena Reflexas love to be cut back. You can use the stem cuttings to propagate new plants.

DRACAENA REFLEXA FAQ'S

1. The bottom leaves on my Song of India are turning yellow and falling off. What should I do?
The Song of India needs better light. Move it closer to an east or west-facing window. The more variegation in the leaves of a Reflexa, the more light it requires.

2. Is a Reflexa a clean air plant?
NASA has determined that a Dracaena Reflexa can clean the air of formaldehyde.

3. I can't seem to get my Song of Jamaica to grow tall like my dracaena warneki. Should I fertilize it more?
Fertilizing it more will only cause brown leaf tips. A Song of Jamaica, unlike a Dracaena Warneki, stays pretty short indoors; it rarely gets taller than 4 or 5 ft. The interesting twisting stems and colorful leaves of a Song of Jamaica more than make up for its short stature.
